Young taiwanese designer Jamie Wei Huang exhibited her understated, delicately futuristic SS14 collection at the Berlin Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Grabbing the spotlight with her reflective fabrics, iridescent appliqués and minimalist galactic-traveler’s helmets, Huang proved there is still room for experimentation and fantasy twists on the catwalk.

The collection is inspired by optical art and illusions, confusing visual movement, three-dimensional texture plays, and contours a diaphanous, yet slightly masculine silhouette. The pieces exhibit deep volumes, whilst maintaining sharp cuttings and a well-tailored, precise aspect. A passion for ancient art of the designer is readily apparent from the fine constructivist edges she defines, cutting and sawing the body of the clothes with the rigor of an astute sculptor. Jamie keeps lines clear, sophisticated, but adds a bubbly touch through the minute embellishments adorning each piece.

Even though the collection uses as base white pure silk, Huang is no stranger to integrating unexpected fabrics and intriguing details. Toying with transparencies and surreal silvery-iridescent, marbled fabrics, she creates a magnificent play of light, yielding a dream-like effect. Each of Jamie's projects is an excuse to find novel, exciting ways to jazz up a milky piece of silk, taking it to new heights through small, so subtle, almost endearing artifices. For this collection, the artist used ceramic and glass pieces put together in a diffused psychedelic puzzle. Not only does their alignment create interesting shapes, confer depth and texture, but it also adds a new dimension to the artistic canvas in an unprecedented way.
