Nuno Baltazar’s collection was certainly one of the highlights of this year’s Lisbon Fashion Week. The designer’s strong and consecutive artistic point of view resulted in yet another successful line-up of elegant womanswear. This year it was all about the sea- “Mar de Sophia” was Baltazar’s take on the work of a famous Portuguese poet, Sophia de Mello Breyner Anderson. In fact, one motive inspired him in particular: the ocean in all its glory.
A rather muted color palette, that consisted of many shades of azure, grays, blacks and clay pink, was Baltazar’s way to interpret peaceful amplitudes of the ocean. Contrasting the calm were the shapes: rich peplum and piles of ruffles insinuated the water’s wild and unpredictable side. While successfully interpreting this season’s inspiration, the designer didn’t get lost in that great, big blue.
For Baltazar, it is always about attaining his signature ultra feminine silhouette. Using thin belts and the occasional bow tie, the designer emphasized the waist and created complementing, hourglass contours. That being said, the accent was certainly on the skirt, presented in various lengths and forms. Polished tailoring also came through: fitted high-waisted pants and that midnight blue corset were maneuvered to perfection. Accessorized with large cat eye sunglasses the outfits were given the final touch of lux. To sum it up: Mar de Sophia was poetically refined!
