Maharam Shell Chair Project

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary and ICFF, Carl Hansen & Son has teamed up with the legendary textile brand Maharam to release twenty special versions of Wegner’s Shell Chair.
Each of the chairs, enlivened with the palette of some of Maharam’s most famous textile designs and coordinating wood frames, highlight the elegant versatility and innovative soul of Wegner's opera.
It was concieved in 1963, but it took 35 years before it became popular and received the numerous design awards that it deserved.
The Shell Chair's unique silhouette is simultaneously minimalistic yet generous with a broad wing-shaped seat and curved legs, and bears no expiring date. It stands perfect in contemporary interiors as good as the first day it saw the light.
Indeed Wegner, with his enduring love of good craftsmanship and constant pursuit of minimalist expression, has repeatedly demonstrated that thought-through design never goes out of fashion.
Now, the CH07 -its official name- serves as a foil for Maharam’s diverse range of textiles.
Starting from the re-editions of Joseff Hoffman's ''Design 9297'' and Alexander Girard's ''Palio'', we find the collaboration with Hella Jongerius, Marian Bantjes, Sara Morris and Paul Smith.
As such, each version tells a different story.
The Shell Chairs have been on display at the Carl Hansen & Son showroom at 304 Hudson Street through June. The collection is currently available for sale through authorized dealers.
