Magnetized Float Table by RPR

Wooden cubes seemingly floating besides one another to form a table may seem like some kind of optical illusion, but in reality this is the outcome of classic physics applied to modern design; an interesting combination with a quite remarkable result.
Designed and constructed by a team at RockPaperRobot who have backgrounds in robotics, electrical engineering and artificial intelligence, on the one hand, and design, film and advertising on the other, the company itself “is an engineering boutique specializing in the innovation and fabrication of high-end kinetic furniture, lighting, and installations.”
The float table, created by the co-founders of the company, is probably one of their most impressive pieces they have ever designed.
Resembling a bit an oversized Rubik’s cube, the table is a composed of a 3D- matrix of magnetized wooden cubes levitating next to one another. To ensure that the repelling cubes are kept in equilibrium, RPR has implemented a system of tensile steel cables in the body of the table.
The most fascinating feature of this design is the art of perfectly combining rigidity and stability, two complete opposites, into a single piece of furniture. When taking a glace at it the table seems perfectly steady but applying force of any kind revels its dynamic component for a moment before going back to its original form.
