Wood-Skin

“Wood-Skin” is a project launched by a team of four talented young individuals:Giulio Masotti, Stefano Baruffaldi, Susanna Todeschini and Gianluca Lopresti. The young team is based in Milan but has also already worked in Montreal, Canada, with amazing success.

Their innovation is a completely revised way of working with wood that perfectly combines its strength and the flexibility of texture. Wood-Skin’s wood becomes a net, able to be shaped in many forms while still retaining its structural and aesthetic characteristics in an undamaged way. Thanks to its extreme malleability, the designers can continuously adjust the material during the building phase, without the need of using expensive and un-aesthetic fixing systems.

Wood-Skin is then stronger and more versatile than the respective independent materials. This unique feature provides for many potential applications of the material. It can absorb the structural pressures of tension and compression, changing shape, without being spoilt in the process.

Getting to a more technical level, the final material is made from Russian plywood and vinyl mesh, with A CNC-router cutting a configuration of triangles into the plywood’s rigid surface to give it elasticity. In this way the malleable and durable material can be used to create a variety of classy, efficient structures. Due to its immense flexibility, it can be used for both, interior and open-air designs (thanks to the availability of waterproof designs), detachable and interactive surfaces, suspended ceilings, or as a bridge element.

Imagine it like a human body, as Masotti, CEO of the company, said, a skeleton with its junctures and muscles expanding and contracting behind the skin, defining movements and posture.
