Alexandra Westfal

Think sophisticated. Think provocative. Think effortlessly cool. Think Alexandra Westfal.
Milan’s Istituto Europeo di Design graduate once again proved why she is growing into a big shot on the Latvian fashion skyline. Inspired by the work of claimed Korean minimalist painter and sculptor, Lee Ufan, young Latvian designer delivered a collection of wearable, quality pieces that are easily translatable into everyday fashion. Throughout the collection her aesthetic was clear: the designs were simple and sleek and at times a little Calvin Klein circa-90s reminiscent. Westfal didn’t overthink. The fabrics she used - thin knits, cottons, silky translucent materials, but also leather, were all in sync with the minimalist inspiration. The designer took basic sportswear pieces such as shorts and sweaters and gave them a couture spin, while the daring see-through geometrical cuts added sexy to your everyday knitted jumper. The dominantly monochrome line-up consisted of whites, reds and blacks and was occasionally refreshed with geometric prints.
Having seen Westfal’s presentation at the Riga Fashion Week, it seems that the she understands both her client and global fashion tendencies - her proposal is on trend, pragmatic and commercial. No doubt the future is bright for Alexandra Westfal.Dec. 11, 2013
